3DD: Final Bridge

This is the final bridge that we made as a group, taking inspiration from our design ideas we done in our sketchbooks. Overall, the bridge was not very successful as it collapsed underneath the weight of a remote control car, travelling across it. We used cardboard and sticks to make the bridge.

If I were to build the bridge again I would have compact the sticks together more to toughen the frame of the bridge.

3DD: Protection Results

This is a before (birds eye view) and after of my Spaghetti structure. The second photo demonstrates the destructive results of the basketball's impact.

You can see that from the outside the structure seemed to have held it's shape rather well. However, the protection mainly held the spaghetti in place, but did not manage to prevent the pieces braking. In order to improve the design I would have to create a stronger shield that surrounds the entire structure.

This is a quick sketch of the Spaghetti structure I made, featured in the previous post.

3DD: Spaghetti Structure

This project involved using the idea generation exercise to produce a number of designs for a structure made from 20 pieces of spaghetti and a glue gun, which could hold 3 plastic balls. The sketches seen here are my initial ideas of which the 5th one I base my final structure on. The structure managed to hold each ball, however, would not stay upright for long without blue tac. I also wish I used more spaghetti to strengthen it's aesthetic value.

3DD: Cardboard Chair

The task was to make a structure that could support all of your weight from at least 30cm off the ground and can fold flat, using 4 pieces of cardboard. Apart from looking slightly like a toilet my "chair" effectively held my weight and folded flat. However, any extra weight would cause it to buckle.

3DD: Bottle Holder

The task was to build an 'interesting' structure, taking note of not just practicality but aesthetics too, using a piece of A1 paper and and an allocated about of selotape. I went for a triangular shape as it is classified as a strong structural shape. However, the design didn't work because the paper was too flexible and the structure was crushed under the weight of the water bottle. If I were to redesign this I would work on trying to make the paper stronger.

This is a fashion shoot I done in order to show off the design of the shoe I made, by manipulating paper. The initial idea of the flat platform was, of course, inspired by Creepers and the ankle ruff is just an extremely glorified buckle. There were a lot of heavy weight design concepts going onto this shoe, so the idea of the curls placed on top of the laces not only emphasised the presence of the laces, but also add a softer edge to the design. However, because everything was rather oversized I don't think that intention is apparent and the shoe generally just looks clumpy. Although, I have to say, personally I like that quality, being a fan of shoes like, DM's, Creepers and platform boots.

I was shocked to have received mostly positive feed back from my peers concerning the shoe. They found it to be very inventive, more of a construction or sculpture than a garment. In relation to the project, I suppose I achieved what I was asked of because I made a, debatably, outrageous, wearable garment. Although, not a very durable one. If I were to repeat this project, I would definitely have made the shoe a little more stable and durable. By the end of the day it was falling to pieces.  

Fashion and Textiles: 5 Samples

I made 5 samples following the project title: Paper Manipulation, with the idea of structure in mind. The first sample was based on the city scape e.g. skyscrapers and bridges. The second on the strongest shape to build a structure for, which is of course the triangle. The third sample reminds me slightly of the Pinnacle, a building that is currently being constructed in London. The fourth one is my least favourite, as it is quite weak, made just by scrunching balls of paper together and attaching them to one another. The fifth one is the prettiest sample, here I curled the paper, using the blade of a pair of scissors.

I made five samples that were based on the idea of structure, by manipulating paper. I found the exercise quite enjoyable, as it enabled my to free think and be very hands on. The processes of making each sample by hand also gave me extra insight into how the structures are formed eg techniques.
